I'm sure if you presented him with directions to a garage selling petrol at £1.39 a litre he (and all other drivers claiming to not see/ be confused by signs) would have no trouble understanding it.

Couple with toddler in back end up with car on top of them after crash on country road
A young family were going about their Saturday afternoon when they were in collision with another car. After a number of 'near misses', there are now calls for the speed limit to be cut

The exact circumstances of the collision are unknown, including the speeds of the vehicles involved, but the mum said there needed to be better signs to warn drivers of some of the potential hazards. and a lower speed limithttps://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/couple-toddler-back-end-up...

And there was me thinking that every inch of Wales was covered in 20 mph limits.

"the mum said there needed to be better signs to warn drivers of some of the potential hazards"

Errrr.... High hedges, narrow road, bends. And that's just fron that one photo. Why would any competent driver need a sign to tell them that they need to moderate their speed and use the horn ?

How to catch the bus. There's also one about getting off it. If I was going to France or Gernany I guess there'd be no shame in reading up on how to use the RER and the U-Bahn. I guess this is a great way of removing obstacles to public transport use - one of the better things the internet has done -  but isn't using buses a life skill like brushing your teeth or tying your shoe laces??

https://youtu.be/5-yvQBZEhx8?si=foIco7ss8ljVBA8h

I've never found a bus system that didn't have a learning curve. I've ridden buses in at least:

  • London (probably the easiest)
  • Glasgow
  • Chicago
  • Washington, DC
  • Seattle, WA
  • Portland, OR
  • Peoria, IL
  • Denver, CO

I gave up in Dublin and walked everywhere, but I did find the train there easy to figure out.

It's (usually) easy to find a schedule and routes, but with an unfamiliar system it's often not obvious to figure out:

  • Do I need to buy a ticket in advance? Day pass?
  • Where do I buy it?
  • Can I buy it as I board?
  • Can I pay cash on board? How much do I need?
  • Do I have to pay again if I transfer?

And yes, my expectation used to be that if I was waiting at a bus stop, the bus would stop. That doesn't always work.

Exactly like it, in that you have to be taught; if "everyone" uses electric toothbrushes or slip-on shoes you probably won't!

Presumably "I have to drive the kids everywhere" at least in part because that's simply what everyone else does (and your kids will be the butt of jokes / abuse / social isolation if you don't.  Assuming they still spend some time not online?

OK this article and the post it's based on is probably nonsense, although I have occasionally seen it happen in my locality.

Drivers failing tests for stopping at red light due to little-known law

A quirk of the Highway Code is to blame for the failure, which has gone viral on YouTube and social media apps.

"The fact it’s almost impossible to find the parking restrictions online – with drivers often forced to read the small print on physical signage at the location to understand the precise rules – only adds to the difficulties faced by motorists."  🎻

Ah - our sometime commentator "Nigel" was only half-right!  Clearly you not only can go through a red light if it isn't yet "established", but you also should if it's been permanently establish in the wrong place!

Another utterly pathetic sentence

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-oxfordshire-68835711

100 mph, drunk, young child, completely fortuitous no one else was caught up in it.

"A drunk-driver has been found guilty of dangerous driving and child neglect....   - .... received a two-year suspended sentence at Oxford Crown Court and was banned from driving for two years."

"Although other neighbours were outside, nobody else had thought to alert her mum and siblings because there was no car on the drive so they didn’t realise they were home."

So if the 6-year-old hadn't happened to have been outside in view of the house at the time, they would all have been left to die, just because they had no car in front of their house.

Petrol prices are soaring - and could soon go well above 150p a litre

This was echoed by AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet, who said pump prices were climbing towards the point "drivers fear".

"It is a psychological shock that shouts out from the price boards each time motorists drive past," he said.

'Bad parking' blocks firefighters multiple times on same emergency call-out

A crew from Dogsthorpe Fire Station was delayed multiple times on their way to an incident due to inconsiderate parking on multiple roads in Millfield, according to the fire service.

They said many vehicles, in particular a van, were poorly parked narrowing the road, which prevented the fire engine from travelling. The crew were unable to proceed until they had located the owner and requested the van be moved, delaying them by around ten minutes.

Retired policeman from Swanley fined after forgetting to display blue badge at free Bluewater car park

https://www.kentonline.co.uk/dartford/news/fury-at-disabled-dad-s-blue-b...

"he forgot to display his blue badge when he parked in a disabled bay."

"he accidentally put his blue badge in the glove compartment when asked by her to display it and when they returned to their car they found a fine for £95."

Can't quite be sure who was driving/whose car, but it sounds to me like the daughter is blaming anyone but herself, not least her dementia suffering father, for incurring the penalty.

Residents of Eling Hill say they will continue to fight for toll bridge fee exemption after Totton and Eling Town Council clarifies legal issues

They disagree with the council’s offer to buy a pass giving them unlimited travel for a £25 administration charge (50p/ week, FFS), and plan to now lobby NFDC, which will make the final decision on the fees.

A meeting of Totton and Eling Town Council on Wednesday rubber-stamped the plans after hearing there was a legal right to levy a toll as the bridge is a private road.

Advice sought by the council also confirmed that, despite residents previously being granted exemption, this had not created any permanent rights for it to continue.

an innocent motorist writes ...

Letter: 'Feeling harassed trying to pick someone up at train station'

"In the 10 minute delay two parking officers emerged happily taking down details of cars waiting on limited spaces around the usually empty taxi lanes.

Surely this is preying on motorists as opposed to routine parking control? It is time to question  the motives behind these actions, and it looks and feels like monetary targets are prevailing over good considered decisions."
